1. 
   In the 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader by John Maxwell, read the chapter on teachability
   
2. Print out and read/watch and mark this talk: Truth Endures by D. Todd Christofferson
1. Ask the 5 types of questions and write your answers in your commonplace book and bring it to class, this is your ticket into class today, so don't forget it.
2. Find 3 principles that are taught in the talk and add them to this doc.  Write them in the "if...then..." format.  
3. Do a word study on inquisitiveness
4. Watch these videos.  Take notes in your commonplace book on what you learn.

Know/Understand

Build a Rube Goldberg machine and video it working so we can watch it in class.  (This way you won't have to move it or worry about it being to big to get to the Martin's.)

A Rube Goldberg machine, named after American cartoonist Rube Goldberg, is a chain reaction-type machine or contraption intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overly complicated way. Usually, these machines consist of a series of simple unrelated devices; the action of each triggers the initiation of the next, eventually resulting in achieving a stated goal.  

Here are some examples: (I hope you guys find these as hilarious as I do!!!)

• How to pass the salt (This one is so funny!  By the time it ended I'd almost forgot what they were trying to do!  Your machine doesn't need to be anywhere near this long or large, but you can learn a lot of devices for your own machine from this video.)
• Morning Routine Machine
• How to make a PBJ
• Okay... now for an actual example of what I'm asking you to do...Feeding the Dog

Become/Serve

In the article we read, Elder Christofferson says, 

"There really are only two options. One is to pursue truth by heeding the words of Christ—“He that keepeth his commandments receiveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all things.” The other is to be taken in by the adversary and attempt the impossible—to find happiness in his fictions. One cannot succeed in life here or hereafter by ignoring the reality of truth, but some, actually a lot of people, try it—it just looks so much easier than repenting. But only repentance and obedience to the truth of God free us from a fantasy world that is destined to fail, “and great [shall be] the fall of it."

Where in your life do you need to find greater truth?  What commandment are you struggling to obey?  What family rule do you break every time?  What relationship do you have in your life that could be better and more meaningful?  Why don't you ever have any money when you need it?  Why do you procrastinate your school work? etc.

The solution to all of these questions can be found by finding the truth and the principles surrounding the thing that is "off" in your life.  Choose 1 thing that is "off" in your life and find 5 true principles that can help you get back on track and record it in your journal along with some applications - stemming from the truths you've found - to implement in your life.  (If you're really struggling to find the principles, ask your parents and they can help you or call Sis. Cloward.)

Here's an example:

If I find that I never have any money when I need it, I can find some financial principles to get me on track.  

Financial Principles:

• If I spend less than I earn, then I will never overspend.
• If I track my expenses, then I will know where my money is going.
• If I use a budget, then I will know where my money needs to go.
• If I save 10% of everything I earn, then I will have money available in case of an emergency.
• If I pay my tithing to the Lord, He will "open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it." (Malachi 3:10)

Applications:

• I will pay my tithing the Sunday after every pay check.
• I will track my expenses for an entire month to see exactly where my money is going.

You will need to complete this Utah facts/stats worksheet before moving on to any other assignments below. You only need to complete this worksheet once for the entire 6 weeks of history, so if you completed it in Week 1, you are good to go and can move on to Assignments 2, 3, 4, and 5 below!  Otherwise, please take a few minutes to complete it now

Research a few basic facts/stats about Utah by completing this worksheet.  Try to find the MOST RECENT information possible.  You can print it out to complete it or just copy the topics by hand into your Binder to complete it.  Either way, write the information LEGIBLY and keep a copy of it in your Binder for future reference.  (Here is a conversion website if you need to convert any Metric measurements into US Customary Units.)

Next, let’s learn a bit about the country of France.

Assignment #2:

(If you are feeling like learning a little bit extra, you can also WATCH THIS VIDEO.)

Next, study a map of France.  Then, print out a blank map of France (try this one) and mark the following items on it:  (You will need to show this map on your way into class, so please have it ready!)

*The 10 Largest Cities.

*The Capital City.

*Major Bodies of Water and Rivers in this country, including those surrounding the country (i.e. - oceans, seas, channels, etc.).

*Major Mountain Ranges and Other Distinct Physical Features (i.e. - deserts, plains, peninsulas, etc.).

*National Parks or Natural Areas of Interest.

*Other Surrounding or Bordering Countries.

*Mark Where all the LDS Temple(s) Are and Label Them.

WE WILL BE PLAYING A KAHOOT GAME
with all of the information on this map
as well as a general knowledge of geography and maps.

*  What other countries are near France?
*  How many more temples and Church members does Utah have than France?

At the end of the 6-week History block, we will have a random raffle drawing for a few prizes, which you can enter in AT LEAST ONE of the following ways:

***(You MUST complete at least ONE of these in order to attend Journeyman class.)***

1)   Find a BEAUTIFUL, INSPIRING IMAGE that you absolutely LOVE of something that is notable or distinguishable in France.  Take a screenshot of it and upload the image through the form linked below.  Be prepared to briefly tell us what the location is and what you love about it.

2)   Find a REALLY INTERESTING FACT about France that you think is fascinating and which you think I - as a "grown-up" and your mentor - would NOT know.  Write that fact in your binder, and be prepared to briefly tell us about it.

3)   Find an IMAGE OF AN INTERESTING LANDMARK in France that you would love to visit, and be prepared to briefly tell us about it - why you'd like to visit there.  Take a screenshot of this place and upload it through the form linked below.

4)   Find a RELATIVE IN YOUR FAMILY HISTORY - at least THREE generations back - who is from France or somewhere in the vicinity of France, and write down their name in your binder.  Ask around amongst your family (your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) to see if you can find a little story or interesting piece of information about them to share with us, also including who they are in relation to you (i.e. - your Great Great Grandmother, Great Uncle, etc.).

5)   Find an INSPIRING / MEANINGFUL QUOTE FROM SOMEONE FAMOUS who was/is from France.  Write it down in beautiful handwriting, or create a "Meme" quote pic with it, and include it in your binder.  Or just write it in your binder and MEMORIZE it to share it with us.  You can snap a pic of your artwork and submit it through the form linked below, or enter just the text in the form linked below.  But please put your original artwork in your binder.

History Week 4 Masters Class

**** We had a great discussion about Les Miserables in masters class. If you didn't get a chance to read the first part and join us in class, it's not too late to read the book! We are going to have a Masters+ class -- in other words, a book club discussion outside of Vanguard -- for anyone (adults included) who want to discuss Les Miserables. We will not be meeting to discuss the book until FEBRUARY, so if you start now and pace yourself you'd be reading around 100 pages a week (or less) since we have more than 8 weeks until we would meet to discuss the book. This is totally doable! This is a good challenge for me too, I'm reading the book for the first time and I can't wait to discuss it together :)****

Now on to our next master class assignment. This month we will be reading a Christmas book, Jacob T. Marley by R. William Bennett.

I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to hearing what you loved about it when we meet back together in January.

If you've never read "A Christmas Carol" or if you've never seen a movie/play version of that book then I do encourage you to familiarize yourself with the story before reading Jacob T. Marley. My favorite movie version of "A Christmas Carol" is An American Christmas Carol  or, let's be real, the one by the Muppets is pretty great too :D

So there's your assignment, brush up on the story of A Christmas Carol and then read Jacob T. Marley and THEN send me your idea for the sticker!

Also, if you need stickers from the past then send me a text and let me know which ones so I can get you caught up. I have extra stickers from past books ready to pass along, just let me know what you need :) As long as you've read the book you get the sticker, whether or not you made it to masters that day :)

4. Find 3 principles that are taught in the talk and add them to this doc.  
5. Do a word study on self control or discipline
6. Watch these videos.  Take notes in your commonplace book on what you learn.

We've discussed a lot about goals and passions in Vanguard so far this year.  You've had a lot of time to think about it.  Now it's time to put the pedal to the metal and do something about it.  Think of an area in your life that could use more self-control or discipline and set a goal to do something about it weekly or daily throughout the Christmas Break.  Write this goal down and be prepared to report on how it went when we get back in January.  There will be Vanbucks involved for diligence and self-discipline.

Update!!! We will only be reading until page 63 -- this is the end of the Bishops story, that means we end right before the section titled 11 (13) Petit Gervais. 

63 pages! What a breeze! I bet we can see SO many of you at masters! Can't wait. I do need to know BEFORE NOON on Wednesday if you are planning to come to masters. I'm thinking fancy french treats should be involved in our discussion and I need time to pull that off :D

I will not be doing a sticker challenge since we won't be finishing the book this week so instead your job is to come to class prepared with three WRITTEN discussion questions that can help guide our discussion of the first part of the book.
