1 - Read in "The Story of the World: Vol. 3" Ch. 13, 25, 29, 33

2- Take notes on the chapters in your commonplace book

3 - Add important dates to your timelines

4 - Read the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen

5 - Add to your notecards or common place book:
Bastille, Bourbons, French Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte, guillotine, Marie Antoinette, Robespierre

6 - Watch these two videos French Revolution and American Revolution.

DO THIS:

Create a Venn Diagram. (This is the overlapping circles used to compare and contrast.  If you need help with this look in the vanguard toolbox on the blog.) Compare and contrast the French Revolution and the American Revolution.

I know this can be super easy but put some time into it.  Think about the leaders, the role of the masses, the end results.  How has it changed the world?  Did it change the world? 

Compare the Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen

For class we will be enjoying a breakfast of Crepes and watching the Scarlet Pimpernel.  Please sign up for a food item to share on the email.

Prepare a 5- 10 minute presentation on this country.  Please teach us as much as you can.  Some will have read the chapters in The Story of the World but others may not have.  Bring in other sources.  

Remember, presentations should be engaging. You are welcome to bring items from that country, authentic food, traditional costumes, pictures, maps.... anything to help draw the audience into your presentation.  And always... DON'T BORE ME!

Sorry for the late change, some of these Master Books are just too long to fit into one week!.  Please start The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas.  Read the first 200 pages.  You will finish this book for Masters in Imaginative Arts. Come prepared to discuss.   This is one of my most favorite books!

This is where you get to learn a little of the background of the use of herbs.We are going to go visit an Herbalist after the Printing Museum.  In order to come you need to complete the following:

Do all of the following:

1) Read "An Herbal Legacy of Courage"

2) Read the following scriptures:
     a)  Doc & Cov 42:43
     b)  Doc & Cov 59: 16-20
     c)  Alma 46:40
     d)  Ezekiel 47:12
     e)   Word of Wisdom (Doc & Cov 89); especially v. 10-11

3) Study a little about medicine in 2 of these civilizations; take notes about each (what herbs did they use, similarities, differences, etc):
      a)  Egyptians
      b)  Greeks
      c)  Romans
      d)  Native Americans
      e)  Chinese
      f)  Ancient Israel (Israelite)
      f)  any others that you're interested in

4) Read pages 130-131 from "Daughters in My Kingdom" (it is a Relief Society book - your mothers should have this & can be found at lds.org)   Read the section "Gifts of the Spirit"

5) Answer the following questions:
            - What is herbology or herbal medicine?
            - What's the difference between Medicinal and Culinary herbs?
            - What the difference between an herb and a spice?
           

6) What are the healing properties of each of these herbs?

Did you know:

• Joseph Smith used herbs and didn't like conventional doctors of the day?
• Willard Richards (was in Carthage Jail with Joseph & Hyrum Smith) was a doctor of herbs, a Thomsonian doctor (Samuel Thomson was an herbalist and taught others how to do what he did - thus the name Thomsonian doctor).  
• Brigham Young planted an herb garden at his house in Salt Lake (Lion House) and frequently used herbs.  
• There's an herb whose common name is after Brigham Young because he used it often - Brigham's Tea (it's also called Mormon Tea).  
• Marshmallows were originally made from the marshmallow (mallow) plant?

5 - Read Let The Holy Spirit Guide by Elder Rasband from April 2017 General Conference.  Journal        your favorite parts in your   commonplace book.

Invite your family to come to the HIstoric Crandall Printing Museum with you on Thursday 10:30 - 12:30.  Let me know if they are planning to attend.  It is $5 a person. Vanguard will cover your fee.

-The theme for Vanguard this year is light. We will be going on a field trip to the Historic Crandall Printing Museum.  In that museum you will see examples of three different printing presses.  Each of these presses brought forth more light in the world. Gutenberg, by putting books and especially the scriptures into the hands of the people. The press that the Declaration of Independence was printed on, by bringing more light to the world with the beginning of the United States and the first republic.  And then the press the Book of Mormon was printed on, bringing the light of the restored gospel back to earth.  These are only three examples of an invention that has brought forth more light to the world.  What are some other things that have brought more light into the world.
