History Week 4 Masters Class

**** We had a great discussion about Les Miserables in masters class. If you didn't get a chance to read the first part and join us in class, it's not too late to read the book! We are going to have a Masters+ class -- in other words, a book club discussion outside of Vanguard -- for anyone (adults included) who want to discuss Les Miserables. We will not be meeting to discuss the book until FEBRUARY, so if you start now and pace yourself you'd be reading around 100 pages a week (or less) since we have more than 8 weeks until we would meet to discuss the book. This is totally doable! This is a good challenge for me too, I'm reading the book for the first time and I can't wait to discuss it together :)****

Now on to our next master class assignment. This month we will be reading a Christmas book, Jacob T. Marley by R. William Bennett.

I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to hearing what you loved about it when we meet back together in January.

If you've never read "A Christmas Carol" or if you've never seen a movie/play version of that book then I do encourage you to familiarize yourself with the story before reading Jacob T. Marley. My favorite movie version of "A Christmas Carol" is An American Christmas Carol  or, let's be real, the one by the Muppets is pretty great too :D

So there's your assignment, brush up on the story of A Christmas Carol and then read Jacob T. Marley and THEN send me your idea for the sticker!

Also, if you need stickers from the past then send me a text and let me know which ones so I can get you caught up. I have extra stickers from past books ready to pass along, just let me know what you need :) As long as you've read the book you get the sticker, whether or not you made it to masters that day :)

  1. In the 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader by John Maxwell, read the chapter on self-discipline
  2. Ask the 5 types of questions and write your answers in your commonplace book and bring it to class, this is your ticket into class today, so don't forget it.
  3. Read this Conference Talk: Moral Discipline by D. Todd Christofferson
  4. Find 3 principles that are taught in the talk and add them to this doc.
  5. Do a word study on self control or discipline
  6. Watch these videos.  Take notes in your commonplace book on what you learn.

    1. Islam in Brief (6 min)
    2. The Crusades (5 min)
    3. The Story of the Magna Carta (3 min)
    4. The Renaissance Explained (8 min)
    5. The Renaissance - Crash Course (11 min)
  7. Print this timeline and put it in your commonplace book.
  8. Study the notecards labeled "1".  (The "1" are for this month, "2" is for Jan, "3" for March after Eureka is over and "4" is April.) Don't forget to listen to the music pieces.
  9. Bring 3 of something that you can juggle.  Dryer balls, juggling balls, rolled socks, etc... (NOT golf balls...)  and bring a joke to tell the class.  Make it good, we'll be voting on the best joke.

Know/Understand

Choose 1 of the following people to do a 3-5 minute PowerPoint/Prezi presentation on.  Put your choice in the doc here so we don't double up.  Make sure to include 1) why this person was important to the Renaissance and 2) how they showed self-discipline in their life.  I'm asking for PowerPoints/Prezi this time so that you can be as visual as you can.  We want to see and hear as much as we can from these people.

  • Filippo Brunelleschi
    • Michelangelo
    • Sandro Botticelli
    • Titian
    • El Greco
    • Pieter Brueghel the Elder
    • Donatello
    • Leonardo Da Vinci
    • Jan van Eyck
    • Raphael
    • William Shakespeare

    • Thomas More
    • Johannes Gutenberg
    • Henry VIII
    • Lorenzo de' Medici

    Become/Serve

We've discussed a lot about goals and passions in Vanguard so far this year.  You've had a lot of time to think about it.  Now it's time to put the pedal to the metal and do something about it.  Think of an area in your life that could use more self-control or discipline and set a goal to do something about it weekly or daily throughout the Christmas Break.  Write this goal down and be prepared to report on how it went when we get back in January.  There will be Vanbucks involved for diligence and self-discipline.

What are you passionate about?  You looked into this in Bro. Jessee's class earlier this year.  Make a list of 5 things you are passionate about.  What makes you passionate about them?  Are any of them moral or ethical issues?  At the end of our chapter in 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader, we read about Gen. Billy Mitchell and his passion for flying.  We read, "He was willing to pay any price to do what he knew what right.  How about you?"  Ponder on this questions and journal about the price you are willing to pay to do what you know is right and to follow your passions.
