 History Week 1: Nov. 4, 2021 - Obedience

Study/Learn

1. Study your notecards We'll be passing out notecards to you this Thursday, so take this week to solidify your play memorization and work hard to be up to date on The Living Christ and we'll start with notecard games next week.  
2. In the 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader by John Maxwell, read the chapter on servanthood
3. Ask the 5 types of questions and write your answers in your commonplace book and bring it to class, this is your ticket into class today, so don't forget it.
4. Read this Conference Talk: Obedience Brings Blessings by Pres. Monson
5. Find 3 principles that are taught in the talk and add them to this doc.  Write them in the "if...then..." format.  
6. Do a word study on obedience
7. Watch these videos.  Take notes in your commonplace book on what you learn.
• 5 Things you should know about the Roman Empire (5 min)
• The Rise and Fall of the Byzantine Empire (5 min)
• The Middle Ages (4 min)
• Life in Medieval Europe (25 min)
8. Print this PDF history of the Kings of England.  I printed 2 pages per sheet and made a little booklet.  Put it in your commonplace book.  (If you want to, you can just print 1/family).  We'll refer to this throughout the year.  Glance through it and see if you notice any patterns.

Know/Understand

How does obedience play into the Middle Ages?  Find a story about a person or event from the Middle Ages that shows obedience or lack of obedience.  Create a video of yourself as a newscaster telling the story of your person as if their story were on the news.  Keep it to less than 2 minutes.  (You'll see the timestamp on your video...make sure it's less than 2 min.) and upload it to the YouTube channel.  The instructions are here.  

Become/Serve

Pres. Monson said, 

"Obedience is a hallmark of prophets; it has provided strength and knowledge to them throughout the ages. It is essential for us to realize that we, as well, are entitled to this source of strength and knowledge. It is readily available to each of us today as we obey God’s commandments....The knowledge which we seek, the answers for which we yearn, and the strength which we desire today to meet the challenges of a complex and changing world can be ours when we willingly obey the Lord’s commandments. I quote once again the words of the Lord: 'He that keepeth [God’s] commandments receiveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all things.'” (D&C 93:28)

Ponder on all that you've learned and felt about obedience this week.  Write your feelings in your journal.  Read through the For Strength of Youth pamphlet and evaluate yourself on each topic.  Is there a topic or two that you could be more obedient in?  Make a list of the topics that you could have better obedience in and then choose one and set a goal to work on it this week.
