Become/serve

Feast!

Research food that people ate in medieval Europe and bring something to share in class!  I'll provide the chicken! :D

We'll watch a movie while we eat with our fingers! (This time I'll make sure the movie works.)

Let me know who's coming so I can make sure to get enough chicken, and if you have suggestions of a good movie let me know. There are so many to choose from.

February Journeyman

Happy Valentine's day everyone! In honor of all that mushy gushy stuff, I want everyone to find out how your grandparents/parents proposed and prepare a presentation on that!

And here is an optional funny video:
It's a Studio C sketch called Grandparent's Little Secret.

Know/Understand
Make and bring food made from a family recipe, and bring a copy of the recipe to share.

Become/Serve
Spend at least 15 minutes on family search.

See you there!

Medieval Europe!

February Apprentice

This month we're reading about Medieval Europe!

What do you think of when you hear Medieval times?  For me, Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood, and a bunch of other movies! Plus there's Celtic Women, Loreena McKennitt, and a bunch of other singers and bands.  :)

Take a look at this pretty song:

Study/Learn

Read Story of the World Vol. 2, ch. 1-3, 14-16, and 18-19.
While you're reading you can underline and add to your timeline of when things happened.  For example the first Crusade happened in 1096.

Write these down on note cards:

Byzantine Empire
Dark Ages
Feudalism
Feif
Guilds
Battle of Hastings
Knights
Medieval
Norman Conquest
Serfs
Vassals
William the Conqueror
Cast System

Where applicable, add your note cards to your timeline.

Know/Understand

Here are a list of some people that we read about in The Story of the World.

Augustine
Charles the Hammer - Tara
Eric the Red - Jessica
Alfred the Great
Saladin - Anthony
El Cid (Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar) - Jaykob
Richard the Lionhearted - Jayson
John Lackland
Robin Hood - Elaine
Rabbi of Cordova
Leif Ericsson
William the Conqueror - Amanda

Pick a person you'd like to learn more about, and research online or at the library about them.  You might want a parent nearby to help you.
Also if you happen to find another person that's not on the list that you want to use, just let me know and I'll add them!
Get out your timelines and add more dates if you haven't gotten them all down.

Remember to email me who you're researching so that we don't overlap!

Become/Serve

Write a "journal entry" from the person you researched, and be prepared to read it to the class. (Make it longer than a couple of sentences.)  Also come prepared to tell us a little more about whose journal entry you're reading from.   Maybe we'll be able to guess who it is!

Also study up on your cards.  Come to class prepared with thoughts or questions that might have popped up over your studies this Vanguard year!  Write them down if you need.  I want to discuss how our year has been so far and what we've learned and how our ideas have changed.

The more discussion the better! :D
