Study and Learn:

*Read each of the following chapters from Story of the World. This looks like a lot of reading but in reality a lot of these chapters retell Bible stories you are very familiar with so I expect you will go through the material quickly.

SOTW1 Ch 6: The Jewish People
SOTW1 Ch 14: The Israelites Leave Egypt
SOTW1 Ch 37: The Beginning of Christianity
SOTW1 Ch 38: The End of the Ancient Jewish Nation
SOTW1 Ch 39: Rome and the Christians
SOTW2 Ch 20: The Diaspora

7 Tipping Points : Chapter 1

*Continue your notes for each chapter -- illustrate, write notes, blurbs, whatever works for you and have notes in your commonplace book about each chapter.

Know and Understand:

We will not be doing presentations this week, instead each one of you will be doing the same big project. This is not something that will be easily completed the day before Vanguard so please don't put it off, if you put a lot of effort into this project my hope is that it will be something that can serve you for years to come :)

*You are going to be creating a visual timeline of the Jews and Early Christianity. Here are the parameters for the project:

-Though this timeline will mostly cover the dates and information from Story of the World, I would like the first date on your timeline to begin with the year 4000 BC (First dispensation with Adam) and end with the year 1830 AD(Seventh Dispensation with Joseph Smith). Most of your dates will happen between 2000BC (Abraham) and the year 330 AD (Constantine) because that is what our reading is focused on.

-The timeline must be of a size that it can be folded and kept in your scriptures. I plan on making my own and I will be cutting down printer paper to the height of my scriptures and taping a few pieces together if need be to make it long enough.

-The timeline must include facts from each chapter of Story of the World, with dates. Please make the facts more than just "Diaspora starts" -- give details so that someday when the reading isn't fresh in your mind you'll still remember what it all means. If the fact is "Birth of Christ," that is fine to go without a description, use your common sense but choose to include details.

-The timeline must include visuals. This could be pictures printed off the internet or drawings you do yourself. Do your best work, if your best work means stick figures then I'm going to expect them to be tidy and help illustrate your timeline, not a messy last minute effort.

-The timeline needs to include at least 4 quotes from General Authorities about the children of Israel. These quotes should not be random, search on LDS.org for quotes that speak to you about what you are learning or that apply to the information on your timeline.

-When you write about Abraham on your timeline please include the Abrahamic Covenant + a description (STOW does not do a good job of explaining this covenant, find an overview on LDS.org)

- During October Conference President Nelson challenged us to "make a list of all that the Lord has promised He will do for covenant Israel... Ponder these promises. Talk about them with your family and friends. Then live and watch for these promises to be fulfilled in your own life" (Let God Prevail, 10/20)
I would like you to do that study, make your own list of all that God promised he will do for covenant Israel and include that at the end of your timeline. This can be bullet points, a paragraph, quotes, however you want the information.

-Add at least 8 dates to the timeline that aren't mentioned specifically in Story of the World that relate to the topic of the history of the Jews, and the history of ancient Christianity.

- List all 7 dispensations on your timeline. Here is a chart from LDS.org to help you with this part of the assignment.

-Finally, this should be a beautiful timeline. It can be made on a computer or handwritten but it should be something you are proud to keep in your scriptures and to reference when you are reading.

Come to class prepared to share your timeline and what you learned :)

  • 3 crops and where they are grown
  • major mountain ranges and other physical features (deserts, plains, peninsulas, etc)

    • Canaan
    • Red Sea
    • Bethlehem
    • Jerusalem
    • Mediterranean Sea
3 - Here are some articles to help you better understand the history of the conflict between Israel & Palestine since it's in the news almost every day and it's an ongoing issue.  Please read/watch one of the following and prepare for a class discussion. (You can do more if you want to, but are only required to do one):
4 - Study maps of Ancient Israel through the time of Christ, from time of Christ to 1947, and a modern map. Print these for your CPB.

Know/Understand
Write for 5 minutes from the perspective of an Israeli. How do you feel about the creation of Israel and the war that began the next day? Then, switch sides and write for 5 minutes from the perspective of a Palestinian. How do you feel about the creation of Israel and the resulting war?

As an LDS youth, with the perspective of the revelations in the scriptures for the destiny of the Jewish people, what are your thoughts on the formation of the state of Israel?  Journal for 5 minutes.

Study and Learn:

1. Print the note cards and study month 5. You can find them here.

2. Read the following chapters from our history texts:

STOW, Book 1: Chapter  26

STOW, Book 2: Chapter 32

3. Watch the following videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_JuQCiKWUc (How Chocolate is Made)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO5ktwPXsyM (Inca Empire)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3kWJfkqT0g (Aztecs)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6eBJjdca14 (Mayans)

As you finish each chapter and video make a blurb, doodle some notes or write up some bullet points -- any creative way you want to keep the highlights from the chapter in your commonplace book. I might ask to see your notes on Thursday, hint hint.

BONUS: For $5 Vanbucks list each date you come across in your reading on your timeline. I'll count how many dates I come across and check your timelines so don't miss any :D

Know and Understand:

Prepare a creative 3 minute presentation for us on a topic related to the Inca, Maya and Aztec people. Sign up HERE. Do NOT stand and talk to us-- prepare visual aids or share the information in a creative manner.  Ideas include pictures, art, music, 3-d creations, food, slideshows, dance, games (more ideas for creative presentations can be found HERE -- some of these are geared towards younger kids, but you guys are smart and I trust you will make good choices).

Become/Serve:

Last month you wrote up one specific lesson you learned from the person you studied in ancient scriptures -- that write up is what you will be sharing with all of our families at our special fireside on
March 8th. Now that you know you will be sharing your thoughts with the group you might want to review what you wrote, polish it if need be and practice sharing your thoughts so you'll be ready for the fireside.

If for some reason you can't find your write-up from last month, here was the assignment:
- Summarize ONE specific lesson you learned from your person. What stands out to you the most? What lesson did they teach you that gives you strength or builds your testimony? How is that knowledge going to help you in your life? (Notice, I'm specifically looking for personal application)

Each of you should take no more than two minutes MAX to share your thoughts -- if you're worried yours will go too long then time yourself and whittle it down.

Watch this 30 second video about scriptures. I LOVE this quote in the video. I know it's true and I hope you've felt it as you've dug deeper into the scriptures and studied the life of a person from ancient history these last 4 months.

    Become/Serve

We are continuing to work on our person in the ancient scriptures project. Review your studies/notes about your person from last month to prepare for your assignment.

    - This month I want you to find outside sources about your person. Go to lds.org and search and read talks or articles or lessons that reference your person. Ask an adult if there is a book or a podcast or another source that they would recommend you check out about your person. If you have a hard time finding information reach out to me and I would love to help with that but I would be surprised if you don't find lots of new great information just on LDS.org alone :)

    - Write down your new insights and knowledge, you'll be sharing this with a partner in class. What is the coolest thing you learned about your person over the course of the last three classes? What insights did you gain that you did not have before (especially those of you with big scripture heroes who you thought you already knew a lot about!)

When we come back in January we will be finishing this project and preparing for a really cool presentation so this is the last of the research on your person!
